歌川豊国三代（国貞、1786〜1865年）による1855年（安政2年）の死絵「八代目市川團十郎」。死絵とは歌舞伎役者が没した際に追悼のために刊行された浮世絵で、現代のメモリアルカードに相当します。八代目市川團十郎（1823〜1854年）は人気絶頂のうちに31歳で世を去り、その追悼として制作された希少な一枚です。

“Shinie of the 8th Ichikawa Danjūrō” (1855) by Utagawa Toyokuni III (Kunisada). A shinie (memorial portrait print) issued upon the death of the 8th Ichikawa Danjūrō (1823–1854), one of the most beloved kabuki actors of his era, who died at the height of his fame aged just 31. Shinie are a uniquely Japanese form of commemorative art — the ukiyo-e equivalent of a memorial card — and are now rare collector’s items.
