Description
Artwork Information
A work from 1882 (Meiji 15) by Arakawa Chikashige (dates unknown). This yakusha-e (actor print) depicts the popular kabuki/gesaku characters “Komori no Yasu” and “Kirare Yosa,” and is also a valuable example of irezumi-e (tattoo imagery). Originally a triptych including “Otomi,” this item comprises only the two sheets of Yasu and Yosa. The figures’ expressions have a distinctive humor and vitality, and feel strikingly modern.
Artwork Details
“Komori no Yasu to Kirare Yosa” (1882) by Arakawa Chikashige (dates unknown). A vivid yakusha-e (actor print) depicting the beloved kabuki/gesaku characters “Bat Yasu” and “Slashed Yosa” — also notable as a rare example of irezumi-e (tattoo imagery). Originally part of a triptych including “Otomi,” this set consists of two sheets only. The expressive, almost manga-like faces of the figures give this work a remarkably modern energy.
Artist: Arakawa Chikashige
Year: 1882 (Meiji 15)
Technique: Polychrome woodblock print (ukiyo-e)
Notes: Two sheets only (Yasu and Yosa) from a triptych
It should be a triptych with Otomi as well, but this is only Yasu and Yosa. I personally like this piece—their expressions feel like manga characters.
Condition: Note: creases, folds, and repairs present
