“Kumamoto Denpo Zuga” (Picture Transmitted by Telegraph from Kumamoto, 1876) by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892). This remarkable print captures the tense situation in Kumamoto on the eve of the Satsuma Rebellion (Seinan War, 1877), based on news transmitted by telegraph — a pioneering form of visual journalism. Yoshitoshi’s extraordinary ability to freeze a moment in time, almost photographic in quality, is fully on display.
